Chairman of the Chester Eastside Board of Directors John Mackey and Representative of the 161st District of the State of Pennsylvania, Leanne Krueger, discuss the mission of CEI in the place where it happens.

My friends at the Cambridge Dictionary say this about a partner: a person or organization you are closely involved with in some way.

Last week state Rep. Krueger stopped in to CEI to learn more about our programs and activities. It could have been a one-way street: us telling her all about us. It developed into so much more.

Rep. Krueger shared a metric ton of information about other programs, advocates, organizations, and agencies whose mission is closely aligned with ours. Then she proceeded to share with us sources of support at the state level for which we might be eligible. What began with introductions and pleasantries became a deep and rich discussion focused on addressing the needs of those who suffer for lack of basic provisions. It was an inspiring moment in which we rejoiced together in the spirit of partnership.

Like any other nonprofit in an urban setting seeking to offer compassion and work for justice, at CEI our bread and butter (and jelly, if you please) is partnerships. By ourselves we can make a difference in our little corner of Chester. Working in partnership with others we can make a difference in our entire community.

In a true partnership 1 + 1 does not = 2. When two people, two groups, or two organizations commit to address a common goal, suddenly 1 + 1 = 3. Now, imagine the power of 2…3…4…5 groups working in partnership…

I was going to…but decided to refrain from…offering a (long) list of the ones with whom we are partners. The list would be extensive, and I would surely leave some out. So, I commend this exercise to your imagination: take a moment and think about all of the countless people who take part in CEI’s mission – all who make it so profound and powerful. At the end of this exercies, I offer this as a response: Amen.

And so we thank Rep. Krueger for dropping in to share information about resources to confront poverty, oppression, and injustice. Even more, we are grateful for the affirmation that we are at our best when we work together in pursuit of a common vision for a world in which resources are shared equally and equitably by all of God’s children.

May our partnerships be blessed; that they would lead us to the promised day of…

Peace,

Andy
